Judas Iscariot on stage vs screen

Broadway compared with the 1973 film and NBC's 2018 live concert

The Judas of the 1973 film started as the Broadway understudy. Ben Vereen originated Judas at the Mark Hellinger Theatre in 1971 and won a Theatre World Award, but when he fell ill Carl Anderson took over, and the two later alternated in the role. Anderson then played Judas in Norman Jewison's film, earning a Golden Globe nomination, and returned to the part in a 1992 North American tour opposite Ted Neeley.

The film opens with Anderson, already in character as Judas, wandering away from a troupe of actors unpacking props in the desert. On the 1970 concept album Judas was sung by Murray Head, and in NBC's 2018 live concert Brandon Victor Dixon played him opposite John Legend.

Who is Judas in Superstar?

The show is famous for reframing Judas not as a simple villain but as a conflicted disciple wrestling with what he sees as Jesus losing control of his own movement. He worries that the growing fame around Jesus is becoming dangerous, both spiritually and politically, and his choices grow out of that anxiety rather than out of simple greed.

This interpretation was groundbreaking when the show debuted, giving the character a psychological complexity rarely afforded to him in earlier tellings of the story, and it is a large part of why Superstar still feels fresh and argumentative decades later.

Playing Judas on stage

Judas is a lead role, often considered the most vocally and emotionally demanding part in the entire show. The role calls for a versatile, powerful voice able to move between anguished lower register and searing high belting, frequently within the same number.

Actors are drawn to the part because it offers real dramatic range: fierce conviction, guilt, jealousy, and despair all in the space of one performance, which makes it a favorite among performers looking for a role with genuine emotional complexity.
