Broadway compared with the 2004 film
The 2004 film spells out a backstory for the Phantom: Madame Giry reveals that she rescued him when he was a much-abused, deformed boy exhibited in a freak show. Gerard Butler played him after director Joel Schumacher was impressed by his performance in Dracula 2000.
Michael Crawford originated the Phantom in London in 1986 and on Broadway in 1988, winning both the Olivier and the Tony for Best Actor in a Musical. The film also adds a coda to the ending: in 1919, after the auction that frames the story, the elderly Raoul finds a fresh rose tied with Christine's ring at her grave, implying the Phantom is still alive and still loves her.
