Jud Fry on stage vs screen
Broadway compared with the 1955 film
The film version of Jud loses his big song. Lonely Room, Jud's brooding solo on stage, was cut from the 1955 film, leaving Rod Steiger's Jud to share only Pore Jud Is Daid with Gordon MacRae's Curly. Howard da Silva originated the role on Broadway in 1943.
Jud's death changes too. On stage he attacks Curly with a knife at the wedding party and falls on it when Curly dodges. The film instead has him set fire to a haystack with Curly and Laurey standing on it, borrowing from the source play Green Grow the Lilacs, before he dies on his own knife in the fight that follows.

Who is Jud Fry?
Jud is a hired hand on Laurey's farm, a lonely and volatile figure whose infatuation with Laurey curdles into obsession and menace as the story progresses. Unlike the show's sunnier characters, Jud carries real darkness, living in near squalor and nursing violent fantasies that set him apart from Oklahoma!'s otherwise bright, pastoral world.
His rivalry with Curly for Laurey's affection escalates from social awkwardness into genuine danger, and his presence gives the show a psychological weight that was considered strikingly serious for a musical comedy of its time.
Jud's role in Oklahoma!
Jud Fry is a lead role, notable for being an unusually dark and complex antagonist for an early Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, built around the brooding solo Lonely Room, which requires a strong bass baritone and real dramatic commitment.
Originated on Broadway by Howard Da Silva, Jud is often singled out by critics and directors as evidence of how psychologically ambitious Oklahoma! was for its era, and the role continues to draw performers looking to bring genuine menace and pathos to the show.
