King Triton: from the film to Broadway
Broadway compared with the 1989 animated film and 2023 remake
On Broadway, Triton gains a family history the 1989 film never spells out: he is Ursula's brother, and her use of dark magic got her banished. He also sings more, with The World Above (Reprise) when he confronts Ariel for saving a human, the Act 2 quartet If Only, and If Only (Reprise) as he says goodbye to her.
Norm Lewis originated Triton on Broadway in 2008. Kenneth Mars voiced him in the animated film, and Javier Bardem played him in the 2023 remake, which keeps the sibling link and explains that Triton distrusts humans because one of them caused his wife's death.

Who is King Triton?
Triton rules the undersea kingdom and is fiercely protective of his daughter Ariel, distrustful of the human world after past losses connected to it. His strict opposition to Ariel's fascination with humans drives her toward secrecy and eventually toward her bargain with Ursula, the very outcome his overprotectiveness was meant to prevent.
Over the course of the show, Triton is forced to reckon with how his own fear and control pushed Ariel away, softening into a more understanding father by the story's resolution.
Triton's role in The Little Mermaid
King Triton is a supporting role in The Little Mermaid, commanding in presence and requiring a deep, powerful voice suited to a ruler of the sea. The role carries real emotional weight in his confrontations with Ariel and in his final acceptance of her choice to live among humans.
Norm Lewis originated the role on Broadway, bringing gravity and warmth to the part. Audiences remember Triton for his arc from rigid authority to reluctant acceptance, a father learning to let his daughter choose her own path.
