Broadway's original Annie was a late replacement. At the 1976 Goodspeed Opera House tryout, Kristen Vigard played the title role for a week before producers decided she was not tough enough, and Andrea McArdle was promoted from the orphan Pepper. McArdle then originated Annie at the Alvin Theatre in 1977.
On screen, Aileen Quinn made her film debut in John Huston's 1982 film, and Alicia Morton starred in ABC's 1999 TV movie, which gave McArdle a cameo as Star-To-Be. The 2014 film moves the story to the present: Quvenzhané Wallis, Golden Globe nominated for the role, plays Annie Bennett, a 10-year-old Harlem foster child. Celina Smith played Annie in NBC's Annie Live! (2021).
