The biggest screen change to Miss Hannigan is her redemption. On stage she is in on Rooster's scheme and is arrested with him and Lily at Warbucks's mansion. In John Huston's 1982 film, Carol Burnett's Hannigan is horrified by her brother's plan, tries to stop him, is knocked unconscious, and turns up redeemed at the final party.
Dorothy Loudon originated the role on Broadway in 1977, brought in after the Goodspeed tryout Hannigan was judged too mean. Kathy Bates played her in ABC's 1999 TV movie. The 2014 film turns her into Colleen Hannigan (Cameron Diaz), an alcoholic former singer running a Harlem foster home, and in NBC's Annie Live! (2021), Taraji P. Henson's Hannigan is spared arrest when Annie pleads for her.
