Tim Curry's Rooster in John Huston's 1982 film gets a climax the stage version never stages: after Annie is kidnapped, he chases her up a raised drawbridge planning to kill her, until Warbucks's bodyguard Punjab rescues her by helicopter. On stage, Rooster and his girlfriend Lily are unmasked in their disguise as Annie's parents, the Mudges, and arrested by the Secret Service at Warbucks's mansion.
Robert Fitch originated Rooster on Broadway in 1977. Alan Cumming played him in ABC's 1999 TV movie and Tituss Burgess in NBC's Annie Live! (2021). The 2014 film drops Rooster entirely: its fake-parent scheme is run by campaign manager Guy Danlily (Bobby Cannavale) instead.
Who is Rooster?
Rooster is Miss Hannigan's younger brother, a fast-talking hustler who breezes into the orphanage with his girlfriend Lily once he learns there might be money to be made off Annie's situation. He is charming on the surface and opportunistic underneath, always looking for the next scheme.
