Anya: from the film to Broadway

Broadway compared with the 1997 animated film

Christy Altomare originated Anya on Broadway in 2017. In Don Bluth and Gary Goldman's 1997 animated film, Anya was voiced by Meg Ryan, with Liz Callaway providing her singing voice. The stage version keeps her central songs, Journey to the Past and Once Upon a December, but removes the film's supernatural threat: there is no Rasputin and no talking bat Bartok. The danger comes instead from Gleb, a Bolshevik officer sent to kill Anastasia, who cannot bring himself to do it.

The musical also gives Anya a new song, In My Dreams.

Who is Anya?

Anya works as a street sweeper in post revolutionary Russia, haunted by fragmented memories and no clear sense of who she was before. When con men Dmitry and Vlad recruit her to pose as the long lost Grand Duchess Anastasia Romanov for a reward, Anya reluctantly agrees, hoping the journey might also help her recover her real identity.

As she is trained in Romanov history and etiquette, real memories begin to surface, blurring the line between performance and truth. Her journey to Paris, and her growing bond with Dmitry, forces her to reckon with who she truly is regardless of bloodline.

Anya's role in Anastasia

Anya is a lead role requiring a versatile, powerful voice capable of carrying both driving anthems like "Journey to the Past" and more tender, reflective numbers like "In My Dreams." The part demands an actor who can portray both hardened survival instincts and flickers of buried royal memory.

Christy Altomare originated the role on Broadway, praised for a performance that balanced toughness and vulnerability. Audiences remember Anya for embodying the show's central mystery, a character whose search for identity resonates whether or not she turns out to be the real Anastasia.

Anya: frequently asked questions

Is Anya really Anastasia in the musical?

Yes. The stage musical confirms that Anya really is Grand Duchess Anastasia. She proves it to the Dowager Empress by producing the music box her grandmother gave her as a child and singing its lullaby, and the two are reunited.

Does Anya become a princess again at the end of Anastasia?

No. After the Dowager Empress recognizes her, Anya chooses to renounce her royal status and goes after Dmitry instead. The Dowager Empress and Gleb announce that the rumors of a surviving Anastasia are over, and Anya and Dmitry leave Paris together.

Was the real Anastasia actually found alive, like in the musical?

No. The real Grand Duchess Anastasia was killed with her family by the Bolsheviks in Yekaterinburg on July 17, 1918. Remains found in 1991 and 2007 and confirmed by DNA testing account for the whole family, so the musical and the 1997 film are fictional takes on the legend that she escaped.
