Marin Mazzie originated Mother on Broadway in 1998; Mary Steenburgen played her in Milos Forman's 1981 film, which also calls its central family only Mother, Father, and Younger Brother. The endings point the same way but land differently. In the film, Father watches from the house in New Rochelle as Mother leaves with Tateh and Coalhouse's son. The musical goes further: Father dies aboard the Lusitania, and after a year of mourning Mother marries Tateh, adopts Coalhouse and Sarah's son, and moves to California.
On stage she also gets Back to Before, her Act II solo, and sings Journey On with Father and Tateh.
