Broadway compared with the 2008 animated film Horton Hears a Who!

Seussical gives Horton two stories at once. The 2008 Blue Sky film Horton Hears a Who!, with Jim Carrey voicing Horton, adapts the book about the elephant who guards a speck of dust holding Who-ville. The musical also has him sit on Mayzie La Bird's abandoned egg, from Horton Hatches the Egg, and ends with it hatching into a flying elephant-bird. Kevin Chamberlin originated Horton on Broadway in 2000.

The stage Horton also gains a love interest in Gertrude McFuzz, who sings Notice Me, Horton and agrees to raise the elephant-bird with him, and he sings Alone in the Universe with JoJo, the Who who helps save Who-ville.
