Audra McDonald originated Sarah on Broadway in 1998 and won the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical; Debbie Allen played her in Milos Forman's 1981 film. Her death happens differently in each version. In the film, she tries to tell President Roosevelt about Coalhouse's case at a presidential rally and is beaten by guards. On stage, she approaches a vice-presidential candidate, someone shouts that she has a gun, and the Secret Service beat her to death.
