Who is Michael?

Michael lives next door to Billy in a Northern England mining town in the mid 1980s, and he is one of the few people in Billy's world who accepts him without question. While the adults around them are consumed by the miners' strike and its hardships, Michael is busy figuring out who he is, including his own feelings about clothes, identity, and self-expression, and he does it with a cheeky, unbothered confidence that makes him instantly likable.

His friendship with Billy gives the show some of its lightest and most tender moments. Michael does not judge Billy for wanting to dance, and in turn Billy does not judge Michael for the things that make him different either.
