Broadway compared with the 1994 animated film and 2019 remake
Broadway gives Scar a darker second act than the films. In the new number The Madness of King Scar, he tries to make the grown Nala his mate, a threat absent from the 1994 film, and her refusal sends her away from the Pride Lands.
John Vickery originated Scar on Broadway in 1997, singing Be Prepared with the hyenas Shenzi, Banzai, and Ed. Jeremy Irons voiced Scar in the 1994 animated film, and Chiwetel Ejiofor voiced him in Jon Favreau's 2019 remake, which heavily reworked the hyenas to fit its realistic style.
Who is Scar?
Scar is bitter about his position as second in line to the throne and resentful of both his brother Mufasa and his nephew Simba. His jealousy drives him to plot against his own family, setting the tragedy of the story into motion and eventually seizing power over the Pride Lands for himself.
His rule proves destructive, and much of the musical's back half deals with the fallout of his actions and Simba's eventual return to challenge him.
